Love
Letters was initially presented by the Long Wharf Theater in New
Haven,
Connecticut on November 3, 1988. It was remounted at the Promenade
Theatre in New York City the following year, and in 1989 it opened on
Broadway at the Edison Theatre. Many well-known actors assumed the
roles of Andy and Melissa in New York including Kathleen Turner, Jason
Robards, Colleen Dewhurst, William Hurt, Marsh Mason, Christopher
Reeve, Blythe Danner, and Christopher Walken to name a few.
According
to the playwright, Love Letters
began as a series of finger exercises
as Gurney was teaching himself how to use a computer. The exercises
began to cluster around a story, found a life for itself, and grew into
a stage play. |
